Ubuntu Sound Problem

Symptom: No sound running vlc or mplayer in Ubuntu.

Fix: Ubuntu uses esd to manage sound which conflicts with programs that uses oss or alsa for sound, such as vlc and mplayer. Adding killall esd to gnome session startup commands is a quick fix to this problem, though not the most ideal.
