Transporting SGI 1600SW flat panel
I dearly miss the Silicon Graphics 1600SW flat panel back home across the ocean. I would like to ask mum to bring it when she comes visit. Carrying flat panel can be a risky business since it’s too delicate for shipping and too heavy for hand carry. So what you need to do is to unmount the panel monitor, wrap it well for hand carry and ship the base.
I tried once to unmount the panel at home without instructions and it wasn’t so easy. So I thought I’d better lookup the instructions for my parents so they don’t break their backs trying to do this. Instructions on how to unmount the panel from its base can usually be found in the owner’s guide but of course I don’t have with me. 1600SW is discontinued so it’s not so easy to find documentation on the SGI website. Luckily I found under the page for legacy displays and sure enough, it has instructions on removing the flat panel from its base.
Here’s a transcript of it:
- Locate teh 3mm hex wrench included with your flat panel monitor.
- Raise the monitor to its highest position. This makes it easier to remove the screws (which sits on the top of the piece connecting it to the base). See Figure 1-3.
- Tilt the monitor forward for easier access to the two screws. Note: After you remove teh two screws, make sure that you or someone else is holding the monitor.
- Holding the monitor as shown in Figure 1-4, use the 3mm hex wrench to loosen and remove the two hex screws that secure the monitor to its base. Save the screws in case you need to replace the monitor on its base.
- Pull the monitor toward you. You may need someone else to support the base as you do this.
- Optionally, fold down the metal tab at the rear of the flat panel, as shown in Figure 1-4. You may need to use pliers.
I’ll have to remind them to bring the multilink adaptor and DVI cable as well.
I hope this means I get to see my beloved monitor soon.
