Printing odyssey 3/3 - XPP - X Printing Panel
After a long time spent to set it up, printing still is not great! I really support Linux, but as long as getting such a simple thing to work takes several “mandays” of qualified comp. engineers, it really won’t make it to desktops.
- Many applications are not aware of CUPS and use a legacy LPD. The problem is that LDP doesn’t let you select a printer, so printing was somewhat limited. Today we found a great replacement for LPD -
XPP. This simple program pops up a window and lets you select a printer. Why didn’t I know about it before????? Grrrrr…. (BTW KDE solved this problem long time ago and has a very nicekprinter)
- After an upgrade, mozilla (or maybe Xprint) got the US/metric conversion wrong and started printing things 2.54 times smaller. Let’s wait until it gets corrected. One can also print to PS or PDF (in /tmp/XprintJobs), so I can print it later form Acrobat.
- OpenOffice -> gets printer list from CUPS and works ok. WELL DONE!
