Tell mozilla thunderbird to check IMAP subfolder for new mail

I recently switched to mozilla-thunderbird for mail because IMAP in Evolution is just too slow. However I’ve been having problems with getting thunderbird to check for new mails in subfolders of IMAP. Looking through google this seem to be a common problem for new users since you can’t set it through menu options. It turns out that you need to right click on the mail folder and select properties, then selection the option to check for new mails in this folder. This wasn’t very intuitive to me.

However this wasn’t enough to get it working for me although it did for my friend. I also had to set the IMAP server directory to where all the IMAP folders are stored which for me is “mail“. The setting can be found in account setting -> server setting -> advanced -> IMAP.
